Orchids have always been a popular flower for weddings. Their delicate shapes and brilliant colors bring a touch of elegance and exoticism to any floral arrangement. Here are some of the most widely used ones.

Cymbidium orchids

This is probably the most widely used of all of the orchids. Cymbidiums are available all year round from growers in New Zealand, Holland and South Africa. They come in regular size, around 3-4” wide and 6 to 8 blooms per stem, or mini size, about 2” wide and 10-12 blooms per stem. The colors available are white, pinks, reds, yellows, orange, browns, and greens. Cymbidium orchids have the longest vase life of all of the commercially available orchids.

Dendrobium orchids

Dendrobium orchids are another very popular type of orchids that offer a long vase life. They are available all year and the majority of them come from Thailand, although, there are some growers in Singapore, Hawaii and Costa Rica. Dendrobiums usually have 4 to 8 blooms per stem and each bloom is about 1-2” wide. They are available in white, pinks, reds, oranges, green and purple. The blue dendrobiums are tinted.

Mokara orchids

These orchids are mostly grown in Thailand however they can also be produced in other tropical regions of Southeast Asia. The star-shaped Mokara orchids are usually available all year although their availability may be restricted during Thailand’s rainy season of May to September. Mokaras have an average of 6 to 10 blooms per stem and each bloom measures 1-2” in diameter. They are available in white, yellows, pinks, reds, oranges and purples.

Oncidium orchids

The majority of Oncidium orchids available in North America come from Thailand. They have an average of 25 blooms per stem and each bloom is about 0.5-1” in diameter. Also called “dancing ladies”, Oncidiums are often used to add height and volume to flower arrangements. They are available in yellow and light orange shades.

Aranthera orchids

The vast majority of these types of orchids comes from Thailand. Similar to mokaras, aranthera orchids have skinnier petals giving them a spidery shape. Arantheras average  10 to 15 blooms per stems and each bloom varies from 1.5” to 2.5”. Aranthera orchids are usually available all year round. They are offered in white, yellows, pinks, reds, oranges and purples and often have spots of a different color on them.
